Nicostratus -- Deacon and Rogue- One such embarrassment to the order of the diaconate is known to us by name. He is mentioned in correspondence between Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage (A.D. 248-258), and Cornelius, Bishop of Rome (A.D. 249-251). Two of their letters discuss Nicostratus, a dishonest deacon who defrauded widows and orphans and robbed the Church.

St. Callistus -- A Deacon who became Pope- Callistus (also spelled Calistus and Calixtus) is mentioned in Eusebius as being Bishop of Rome for about five years, following Zephyrinus and preceding Urban in the episcopacy.

The deacon in Canon Law- The canonical ministry of deacons springs from a variety of sources. These include the universal law of the Church, the revised Code of Canon Law promulgated in 1983, the documents of Paul VI motu proprio Sacrum Diaconatus Ordinem (18 June 1967) and motu proprio Ad pascendum (15 August, 1972), the liturgical laws of the Church expressed in the various rituals; and laws approved by either the National Conference of Catholic Bishops or the local ordinary.
